Many entrepreneurs have come to me looking for advice on when to sell their internet-based businesses. And a lot of times, my response surprises them because I tell them, “It doesn’t make sense to sell right now.”
In today’s video, I want to explore four common reasons to not sell your business.
As entrepreneurs, we are all liable to experience burnout. We’re wired to start businesses and grow them. But when we get to the day-to-day grind of running the business, it can wear us out, and soon we start looking to other projects.
Some entrepreneurs think it’s better at this point to sell the business rather than suffer through the day-to-day grind. But financially, it doesn’t make much sense.
If you’re experiencing burnout, try outsourcing the worst parts of your day-to-day grind or focus your attention on another aspect of your business. Whatever you do, make sure you explore other options before making that final decision to sell your business.
Competition can be intimidating, especially when your competitors start doing things better than you’ve done in the past.
For some, this might lead them to put their business up for sale. But before you decide to do this, take a look at all the accomplishments you’ve made with your business so far and understand that you probably can compete.
You don’t want to look back and wonder whether or not you should’ve sold your business.
It can be very frustrating for an entrepreneur who’s used to having continual growth from their business to all of a sudden have it down to declining revenues.
Many entrepreneurs think that a decline means they should sell their business. But this is literally the worst time to sell.
We all know that you’re supposed to buy low and sell high, and an entrepreneur who sells their business with declining revenues is doing just the opposite.
Before making a decision to sell, take a mental inventory to see if you have the energy to turn this trend around. You’ll gain a lot of value in the end before selling your business.
Another thing that could happen to a product line is that its popularity runs its course.
There was a period of time over a century ago when the buggy whip industry was booming and viable. But with the invention of the automobile, the buggy whip industry collapsed.
If your business is located in something similar to the buggy whip industry, it might be tempting to try and sell the business before the entire industry collapses.
However, we’ve found that this isn’t always the case.
First, most buyers will discount your business value if it’s in a declining industry.
Second, most business owners will benefit by just hanging on to their business over a longer period of time, even with the slow decline.
So those are four reasons to not sell your business—at least, not yet.
